Is your Pound, under more pressure than your Tyres?

You could save over £100 a year without spending a penny.

According to the ‘Institute of Advanced Motorists’, up to 95% of us are driving on incorrectly inflated tyres. This figure doesn’t surprise Richard Shortis, Managing Director of Fast-Fit Tyres and Exhausts.

In these times of austerity, and with petrol prices due to increase over the coming few weeks and months, more and more people will need to reduce costs where possible.

‘Incorrectly inflated tyres wear unevenly and require replacing more frequently’ Said Richard, ‘The IAM claim that under-inflated tyres could reduce efficiency by up to 2.5%, this may not sound a lot, but based on the average motorist’s yearly mileage being 12,000 miles, at 35p a mile, under-inflation is costing an extra £105 a year’. With ever increasing pressures on drivers to reduce carbon emissions, what better way than to increase vehicle efficiency and reduce costs.

Coupled with the inherent dangers of driving on tyres which have worn unevenly, especially in the wet, or on ice, drivers should be more vigilant with checking tyre pressures more regularly. Loss of friction with the road could lead to loss of control and ultimately could cause a serious accident.

‘We regularly see tyres which have been badly worn on one edge’ Said Mr Shortis, ‘We are able to check tyres completely free of charge at any of our Fast-Fit tyre and exhaust fitting bays in the Anglian region, it’s a very quick process, but could save money and even prevent a nasty accident.’

1.6mm is the minimum legal tread depth across ¾ of the tyre, often tyres which haven’t been inflated correctly, or run out of alignment, may have worn unevenly which may not be easily visible, and may even be illegal. A common sign of under-inflation shows excessive wear on both edges of the tyre, poor alignment may cause excessive wear on one edge. Wheel alignment is a relatively inexpensive process, which can improve road handling, and prevent uneven wear patterns.

It’s recommended that tyre pressures are checked when the tyres are cold, and at monthly intervals. Those who do more than average miles will need to check the condition of their tyres more regularly.

When you consider that your tyres are the only contact the car has with the road, perhaps we should all pay a little more attention to their condition. Maybe  a small amount of inflation could beat inflation?

History

Kevin Shortis started selling and fitting Tyres in 1963 in conjunction with his Motor Spares Store. The business was sold in 1971 but Kevin Shortis then set up Fastfit Exhausts, offering while-you-wait Exhaust replacement. A new service at the time. In due course Batteries and Tyres were added and the company joined forces with Wilco Motor Spares, with fitting stations at many Wilco sites.

Fastfit and Wilco are still separate companies, part of the Shortis Group which is proud of its independent family ownership. Most major Tyre and Exhaust dealers are owned by either Tyre manufacturers or by multi-nationals. Fastfit, being independent, is able to offer all makes of Tyres and Exhausts at prices that match anyone's, backed by personal service from a privately owned company.

Still Independent and still serving the motorist. Facts and Figures Over the last 12 months the Group has supplied and fitted over 112,000 tyres and balanced nearly 120000 wheels. Last year, the group purchased over £2.5M worth of exhausts.
